William Isherwood had previously been publican at The Spinners Arms, 89-91 Mill (Hill) Street, Haulgh for a few years, running it with his father, also William Isherwood (wife Elizabeth) who had the place in 1881. he died in 1885 and his son took over as licensee. William Snr used to be an Engine Tenter (Mill Engineer) and his son, a Weaver, before they took up selling beer for a living.
